Volunteering at Children and Family Urban Ministries
Volunteers make the daily programs at CFUM happen. Without these scores of dedicated people, our work would grind to a halt. Many volunteers will tell you they get as much from their service, and the relationships they develop, as they give. Quick list will give you the highlights.
Groups of volunteers from 45 congregations and organizations in greater Des Moines take responsibility for providing, preparing and serving the evening meals at The Supper Club six nights a week. In addition to those working to prepare the meals, it takes around six people to serve and clean up each evening.
Individual volunteers and groups from colleges and corporations around the area help to serve breakfast and participate in activities with kids during The Breakfast Club, The Haven, Haven Too, Awesome Days and special events.
Individuals with special talents and interests frequently make presentations, give performances, and teach lessons within our afternoon and summer programs.
Volunteers go along on summer field trips to places like area lakes, pools and parks to help with transportation, look out for the childrens’ needs, and join in the fun.
People with mechanical, electrical, construction/remodeling, computer and other skills contribute enormously to keeping our building and systems operating and evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of the people we serve.
Huge numbers of volunteers are needed during holiday family-style meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas to wait on tables and keep the food flowing as we find ways to serve far more people than you’d imagine we could, given the size of our facility, at these special events.
